About “The Merchant of Venice”
In this comedy set in sixteenth-century Venice, Bassanio seeks to win the hand of the wealthy heiress Portia but lacks the money to do so. He asks his friend Antonio, a merchant, for help. Antonio borrows from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, but when Antonio's business fails, he cannot repay the loan. Shylock demands a pound of Antonio's flesh as per the agreement. Portia, disguised as a lawyer, outwits Shylock and saves Antonio. The play ends with the resolution of the conflict, though Shylock is left without his fortune and his rights. The text is from the 1923 Yale Shakespeare edition, edited by William Lyon Phelps, and reprinted in 1957.
