Eleven-year-old boys Penrod Schofield and Sam Williams find their days constrained by adults' plans and schedules, yet still manage dubious experiments and neighborhood skirmishes, including rescuing an overworked horse, chasing black snakes, feigning sickness to avoid school, and saving a cat from drowning, while giving evasive answers to their parents' questions.
