About “Dicey's Song”

In 1982, Cynthia Voigt wrote a novel about Dicey Tillerman and her three siblings, who were left alone when their mother abandoned them in a mall parking lot. After being traced to an asylum, the children traveled hundreds of miles on foot until they found shelter with their grandmother on a rundown farm. Though the farm is not perfect, it allows the family to stay together, which is what Dicey wanted most. However, Dicey struggles with her identity, as she has spent so long taking care of her siblings that she is unsure how to let go of her responsibilities. When the past returns with great impact, she learns the difficulty and importance of letting go.
