Tom Swift Jr. aims to solve the high cost of space vehicles through his new invention, the Space Kite, a two-man craft designed for training future space pilots. His project faces threats from Li Ching, a renegade scientist leading a group that pirates scientific secrets, and from Olin Whaley, an unscrupulous international criminal. After a dangerous test flight nearly strands Tom and his friend Bud Barclay in space, Tom develops a larger craft, the Cosmic Sailer, in pursuit of economical space exploration while confronting the forces working against him.
