About “Book of Sui”
The Book of Sui is the official history of the Sui dynasty, which ruled China from AD 581 to 618. It is part of the official Twenty-Four Histories of imperial China. Written by Yan Shigu, Kong Yingda, and Zhangsun Wuji, with Wei Zheng as the lead author, it was commissioned by Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty. In 629, Fang Xuanling was ordered to supervise its completion, which was finished in 636 AD. This was the same year as the completion of the Book of Chen. The Book of Sui was completed just 18 years after the Sui dynasty ended, making it one of the shortest gestation periods for an official history. It is regarded as a primary source.
