This unique work among Scott's writings is his only collection of shorter fiction, containing 'The Highland Widow,' 'The Two Drovers,' and 'The Surgeon's Daughter,' framed within the narrative of Chrystal Croftangry, an old bankrupt with literary pretensions. The stories address cultural conflicts in the new Britain and its growing empire across thirty years from 1756.
