Lovelace was once a ship's artificial intelligence with human-like emotions and awareness. After her ship was severely damaged, she had to reboot and reset, ending up in an illegal synthetic body. This new form has left her feeling isolated. She is not alone, however. Pepper, an engineer who saved Lovelace by reinstalling her program, remains with her and is committed to helping her adjust to her new life.
