When Countess Zorah Rostova asks London barrister Sir Oliver Rathbone to defend her against a charge of slander, he is astonished to find himself accepting, since defending her can only bring notoriety. Twenty years earlier Prince Friedrich had abdicated his throne to marry Princess Gisela; now the prince is dead, and the countess claims Gisela murdered him, though she cannot produce evidence, and investigator William Monk establishes only that murder occurred, leaving Zorah herself as the likeliest suspect.
