On her way back to London aboard the Thrush, Dido Twite and crew are summoned to aid the tyrannical queen of New Cumbria, an infernal island where birds carry off men and fish eat human flesh. The queen is distressed because a neighbouring king has stolen her lake, and Dido faces fire, flood, wild beasts, and threat of execution to get it back, in a mixture of legend, fantasy, humour, and adventure.
