Alex Cross returns in a new novel by James Patterson, where he faces the dangerous and suicidal Gary Soneji, who is dying from AIDS and seeks revenge. A new rivalry emerges with Thomas Augustine Pierce, an FBI and Interpol agent known as St. Augustine, who has been hunting a killer named Mr. Smith since his fiancée was murdered. Mr. Smith is considered a monstrous figure with terrifying actions. When Alex is severely injured in his home, Pierce travels to Washington to assist in the investigation. He soon uncovers clues about how Soneji managed to attack Cross. Pierce is then called to Paris after receiving a postcard from Mr. Smith inviting him to a deadly event. The story features high body counts, intense tension, and two killers who closely watch their pursuers. The novel explores who is in control and who will survive.
