Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection, publishing jointly with Charles Darwin's writings in 1858. He conducted fieldwork in the Amazon River basin and the Malay Archipelago, identifying the Wallace Line separating Asian and Australasian fauna.
