Alistair MacLean was a Scottish novelist born in Glasgow, the son of a minister, who spoke Scottish Gaelic natively and served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After studying English at the University of Glasgow and briefly teaching, he published his debut novel HMS Ulysses in 1955 and became a full-time writer.
