Andre Norton was an American writer of science fiction and fantasy, born Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of a rug company owner and his wife. She began writing during high school and edited a literary page in her school's paper. Her first novel, The Prince Commands, was published in 1934, and she later published Ralestone Luck in 1938. She graduated from high school in 1930 and briefly studied teaching at Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University before leaving in 1932 due to economic conditions. She worked for the Cleveland Library System and later owned a bookstore called the Mystery House in Mount Rainier, Maryland, which failed. In 1934, she legally changed her name to Andre Alice Norton to increase her marketability. She became a full-time author in 1958 and moved to Florida in 1966 and to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, later in her life. She received the Gandalf Grand Master Award in 1977 and the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award in 1983. She died in March 2005 of congestive heart failure. She is known as the Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy and is credited with publishing over 300 titles. After her death, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America established the Andre Norton Award for outstanding work in young adult fantasy or science fiction.
