Anita Shreve grew up in Dedham, Massachusetts, the eldest of three daughters. She attended Tufts University and later taught high school in the Boston area before leaving to focus on writing. She published early work in literary journals, including a story that won an O. Henry Prize. She also worked as a journalist in Nairobi, Kenya, for an African magazine.
