Anna Akhmatova

1 standalone book

Anna Andreyevna Gorenko (1889-1966), who published as Anna Akhmatova, was a Russian poet born near Odessa. She adopted her grandmother's surname to publish, as her father objected to poetry under his name. She co-founded the Guild of Poets in 1910, published her first book Evening in 1912, and endured her son's imprisonments and her own suppression under Stalin, including surveillance and a withdrawn publication. Her major work, Poem without a Hero, and her poem Requiem, documenting the 1930s repressions, were only published in the USSR in 1987.
