Catherine Ann McMullen, known as Catherine Cookson, was born in Tyne Dock, England, UK. She began writing as a form of therapy and published her first novel in 1950, going on to write nearly 100 books that were translated into at least 20 languages and sold more than 123 million copies. She was awarded an OBE in 1985 and made a Dame of the British Empire in 1993, and was appointed an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford, in 1997. She passed away in 1998.
