About “The fifteen streets”

John O'Brien lives in the Fifteen Streets, where survival is a continual struggle, and works long hours at the docks to support his parents' large family. He meets Mary Llewellyn, a young teacher from a different world, and their relationship develops into a rare love, but they face obstacles when John is accused of fathering a child and Mary's parents forbid the relationship, making them question whether the chasm between their lives can ever be bridged.
