Dalene Matthee was born in 1938 in Riversdal, in the Western Cape of South Africa. She wrote thirteen books throughout her career. She began her writing career with children's stories and short stories, but is best known for her four "Bosboeke": Kringe in ‘n bos, Fiela se kind, Moerbeibos and Toorbos. Each book was preceded by thorough research. Her books have been translated into 14 languages, and Kringe in ‘n bos and Fiela se kind have been used as required reading in schools for more than 20 years. Her work has received several awards, including the ATKV Prosa-toekenning (four times), the Suider Afrikaanse Instituut vir Boswese-toekenning (two times), the Switserse Stab-toekenning, and the Department of Arts and Culture's SA Literêre Toekenning (posthumously). She was the only Afrikaans writer for whom more than one million books in Afrikaans have been sold in South Africa. She died on 20 February 2005, and a memorial stone was erected for her in the Knysna forest.
