A 1985 novel by Dalene Matthee tells the story of two children, Benjamin Komoetie and Lukas van Rooyen. Benjamin lives in the Lange Kloof with his mother, Fiela, who found him as a three-year-old crying at her door. Lukas lives in the Bos with his parents, Elias and Barta, who lost their three-year-old child. The story raises the question of whether the two boys are the same person, considering the possibility that a child could have walked from the Bos to the Lange Kloof. Nine years later, two census takers discover the white child with blue eyes among the brown people. As the boy grows older, he struggles with his identity, believing that knowing who he is is essential to winning the love of the woman he desires. The answer, he believes, lies deep within himself, hidden in his past.
