Daphne du Maurier was a British writer born on 13 May 1907 in London. She was the second of three daughters of Muriel Beaumont and Sir Gerald du Maurier. Her father was a prominent actor-manager and son of George du Maurier, who created the character of Svengali. She was also the cousin of the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. She published early stories in Beaumont's Bystander magazine. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published in 1931. She wrote gothic novels, biographies, and other non-fiction works. Alfred Hitchcock adapted several of her works, including Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, and The Birds. She married Frederick "Boy" Browning in 1932 and had three children. Her husband died in 1965. She died on 19 April 1989 in Fowey, Cornwall. After her death, it was revealed that she was bisexual. She was named a Dame of the British Empire.
