Derek Alton Walcott (1930-2017) was a Caribbean poet, playwright, writer, and visual artist born in Castries, Saint Lucia, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. He is best known for his epic poem Omeros, a reworking of Homeric story into a Caribbean-spanning journey. He founded the Trinidad Theatre Workshop in 1959 and Boston Playwrights' Theatre in 1981, and taught at Boston University until retiring in 2007.
