Edward, also called Edward the Philosopher King or the Eloquent, was King of Portugal from 1433 until his death in 1438. He was born in Viseu, the son of John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster, and was the oldest member of the "Illustrious Generation" of royal children who contributed to the political, social, and economic development of Portuguese society during the 15th century. He was also an author, whose works include the treatise Leal Conselheiro.
