José Maria de Eça de Queiroz was a Portuguese writer and diplomat who lived from 1845 to 1900. He is regarded as one of the most important Portuguese writers of all time. Eça de Queiroz is known for his realist novels, including O Crime do Padre Amaro and Os Maias, the latter of which is considered by many to be the best realist novel of the 19th century in Portugal. He was highly regarded by other writers, including Zola, who considered him greater than Flaubert. His works are recognized for their detailed portrayal of Portuguese society.
