About “The Mandarin”
The Mandarin is a novella written by José Maria de Eça de Queirós, a Portuguese author who lived from 1845 to 1900. The story explores the theme of greed and was first published in Portuguese in 1880. It was later translated into English, with the first translation by Richard Franko Goldman released in 1965 by The Bodley Head. A second English translation by Margaret Jull Costa was published in 1993 by Dedalus Books, and a revised edition of the same translation was released in 2009, also by Dedalus, along with three short stories.
