Edward Wadie Said (1 November 1935 – 24 September 2003) was a Palestinian and American academic, literary critic, and political activist. He was a professor of literature at Columbia University and one of the founders of post-colonial studies. His most influential work, Orientalism (1978), examined the cultural representations that underpin Orientalism and how the Western world perceives the Orient. Said's approach to textual analysis significantly influenced academic discourse in literary theory, literary criticism, and Middle Eastern studies. He is remembered as a key figure in shaping critical perspectives on culture, literature, and politics.
