About “Orientalism”

Orientalism is a 1978 non-fiction book by Edward W. Said that examines the concept of Orientalism, defined as the West's patronizing representations of the East, including Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Said argues that Western scholarship on these regions is connected to imperialist societies and often serves political power. He critiques how Western writers, such as Joseph Conrad, portray the Middle East as an exotic and adventurous place, reinforcing stereotypes. Said's work influenced literary theory, cultural criticism, and Middle Eastern studies. It became a foundational text in post-colonial culture studies. Said addressed criticisms of the book in later editions, including an "Afterword" in 1995 and a "Preface" in 2003. He also debated the ideas of historians like Bernard Lewis, who called the book "anti-Western."
