Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) was a Romania-born American novelist, professor, political activist, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor of Hungarian Jewish descent. He wrote over 40 books, the best known being Night, a memoir of his experiences during the Holocaust and imprisonment in several concentration camps. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
