Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941) was a British-Australian novelist born in Australia who married a German aristocrat, becoming Countess von Arnim-Schlagenthin; her earliest works are set in Germany. After her first husband's death she had a three-year affair with H. G. Wells, then married Frank Russell, brother of Bertrand Russell, becoming Countess Russell. She was a cousin of Katherine Mansfield and used the pseudonym Alice Cholmondeley for the novel Christine (1917).
