Hafez (Khwaja Shams-od-Din Mohammad Hafez-e Shirazi, 1326–1389) was a Persian lyric poet whose collected works, the Divan, are regarded by many Iranians as among the highest achievements of Persian literature. His poems are widely memorized by Persian speakers and used as everyday proverbs and sayings. His life and work have been the subject of extensive commentary and interpretation, and he influenced later Persian writing more than any other Persian author. He is also known by the sobriquet Lisan al-Ghayb.
