Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin, later Baroness Dudevant, best known by her pseudonym George Sand (1804-1876), was a French novelist and memoirist. She is considered by some a feminist, although she refused to join this movement, and is regarded as the first French female novelist to gain a major reputation.
