Gilbert Ryle was a British philosopher who was principally known for his critique of Cartesian dualism, for which he coined the phrase "ghost in the machine." In his book The Concept of Mind (1949), he described his ideas as "behaviourist" and suggested they could also be seen as a form of phenomenology. Ryle studied philosophers such as Bernard Bolzano, Franz Brentano, Alexius Meinong, Edmund Husserl, and Martin Heidegger.
