Giulio Aleni, known in Chinese as Ai Rulüe, was an Italian Jesuit missionary and scholar born in 1582 in Leno near Brescia, then part of the Republic of Venice. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1600 and was recognized for his expertise in mathematics and theology. Aleni contributed to the publication of the Zhifang Waiji, a Chinese atlas, and authored a treatise critical of the Ming dynasty, its emperors, and ruling class. He died in 1649 in Yanping, China.
