Greg Mortenson is an American humanitarian, professional speaker, and writer who was also a former mountaineer. He co-founded the non-profit Central Asia Institute and served as its executive director until he was forced to resign following an investigation by the Montana attorney general. He also founded the educational charity Pennies for Peace. Mortenson is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea, which remained on the bestseller list for 220 weeks and has been published in 47 languages. He is also the author of Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, which focuses on education in Afghanistan and Pakistan. His work has been criticized by writers such as Peter Hessler and Jon Krakauer, who accused him of financial mismanagement, avoiding accountability, and writing a book that Krakauer described as "riddled with lies."
