Hendrik Conscience

Henrik Conscience was a Belgian author who is considered the pioneer of Dutch-language literature in Flanders. He wrote in the Romanticist style during a time when French dominated literature and government in Belgium. Conscience is best known for his novel The Lion of Flanders, inspired by the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs. He fought as a Belgian revolutionary in 1830 and was active during the early 19th century.
