About “The Lion of Flanders”

The Lion of Flanders, published in 1838, is a historical fiction novel by Belgian writer Hendrik Conscience. It is set during the medieval Franco-Flemish War and centers on the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. The novel is written in a romantic style and is considered an early example of historical fiction. It has been called the "Flemish national epic." Conscience was born in 1812 and died in 1883.
