Henning Mankell (1948-2015) was a Swedish writer, human rights activist, and dramatist, born in Stockholm, the son of a judge. He grew up in Sveg and Boras; his grandfather, also named Henning Mankell (1868-1930), was a well-known composer. At 20 he was assistant director at the Riks Theater in Stockholm while also writing.
