About “Kinesen”

In 2006, nineteen people are murdered in the Swedish hamlet of Hesjovallen. The only clue is a red ribbon found at the scene. Judge Birgitta Roslin, shocked by the deaths of her grandparents, learns that an Andren family in Nevada was also murdered. She discovers a 19th-century diary of an Andren ancestor, a gang master on the American transcontinental railway, which details the brutal treatment of Chinese slave workers. The police dismiss the murders as the work of a lunatic, but Birgitta suspects a deeper truth. Her investigation leads to powerful figures in Beijing, as well as to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It also uncovers a history of the Chinese slave trade with the United States, a past that draws her closer to the truth behind the murders. The novel explores this history and its modern implications.
