Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse was a German-American philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist who lived from 1898 to 1979. He was associated with the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory and was born in Berlin. Marcuse studied at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, where he earned his PhD. He was a key member of the Frankfurt-based Institute for Social Research. He was married three times: to Sophie Wertheim from 1924 to 1951, to Inge Neumann from 1955 to 1973, and to Erica Sherover from 1976 to 1979. In his writings, he criticized capitalism, modern technology, historical materialism, and entertainment culture, arguing that they represented new forms of social control.
