About “One-Dimensional Man”

One-Dimensional Man: Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society is a 1964 book by philosopher Herbert Marcuse. In it, he critiques both contemporary capitalism and the Communist society of the Soviet Union. He examines how both systems developed new forms of social repression and how revolutionary potential declined in the West. Marcuse argues that advanced industrial society creates false needs, which integrate individuals into the system of production and consumption through mass media, advertising, industrial management, and modern modes of thought. His work highlights the ways in which these forces shape and control individual desires and behaviors.
