Hermann Karl Hesse, also known by the pseudonym Emil Sinclair, was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. He was born on 2 July 1877 in Calw and died on 9 August 1962 in Montagnola, Switzerland. He is known for prose works such as Siddhartha, Demian, Der Steppenwolf, and Narziß und Goldmund, as well as for his poetry, including Stufen. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946 and the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts in 1954. His writing often focused on themes of self-discovery and spiritual growth.
