About “Gertrud”
In this fictional memoir, the composer Kuhn reflects on his complex relationships with two artists: his friend Heinrich Muoth, a brooding and self-destructive opera singer, and Gertrude Imthor, a gentle and self-assured woman. Kuhn is immediately drawn to Gertrude when they meet, but she falls in love with Heinrich, whom Kuhn introduces to her through an audition for his new opera. Their marriage is deeply troubled and ends in ruin. Despite this tragedy, the relationship between Gertrude and Heinrich becomes the inspiration for Kuhn's most successful opera, a defining achievement in his artistic career. The story explores themes of love, art, and personal failure.
