Ibn Hawqal was a 10th-century Arab Muslim writer, geographer, and chronicler, born in Nisibis in Upper Mesopotamia. He travelled widely between 943 and 969, and his best-known work, Surat al-Ard, was written in 977. He is recorded to have died after AH 368 (AD 978).
