Ismail I (1487–1524) was the founder and first shah of Safavid Iran, ruling from 1501 until his death in 1524. His reign is considered one of the most vital in the history of Iran, and the Safavid era is often regarded as the beginning of modern Iranian history. Under Ismail, Iran was unified under native rule for the first time since the Islamic conquest eight and a half centuries earlier.
