Aron Ettore Schmitz (1861-1928), known by the pseudonym Italo Svevo, was an Italian businessman and author of novels, plays, and short stories from Trieste. He wrote La Coscienza di Zeno (Confessions of Zeno), self-published in 1923, and Senilita (1898); James Joyce, who tutored him in English, championed his work and helped it gain recognition.
