Emilio Brentani, once a promising young author, is now an insurance agent nearing forty. He falls for the young, beautiful Angiolina, who turns out to be an unapologetic cheat. What begins as a comedy of infatuated misunderstanding turns to tragedy as Emilio's jealous persistence, against the advice of his friends and devoted sister, costs him the person he ultimately realizes he loves.
