J. M. Synge was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, and collector of folklore who played a key role in the Irish Literary Revival. He co-founded the Abbey Theatre with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, and his major works include The Playboy of the Western World, In the Shadow of the Glen, Riders to the Sea, The Well of the Saints, and The Tinker's Wedding. Though born into a wealthy Anglo-Irish family, his writings focused on working-class Catholics in rural Ireland and explored what he perceived as the essential paganism of their worldview. He suffered from Hodgkin's disease.
