José Protasio Rizal-Mercado y Alonso-Realonda, better known as José Rizal, was born in Calamba on June 19, 1861, and died in Manila on December 30, 1896. He was a Filipino doctor (he became an ophthalmologist in Madrid), writer, painter, linguist, and politician. He is considered the national hero of the Philippines and founded the Liga Filipina in 1892.
