About “Noli Me Tangere”

The book follows the struggles of young Crisostomo Ibarra as he fights for his childhood sweetheart, Maria Clara, for himself, and for his fellowmen. He returns to San Diego, his hometown, from Spain to mourn his father's death and discovers how his father, a rich illustrado, was treated before and after his death. This discovery motivates Ibarra to continue his father's plan of building a school while trying to reunite with Maria Clara. The story is told through the eyes of the National Hero of the Philippines and highlights the challenges Filipinos faced during the Spanish era. The novel features many characters who represent different types of Filipinos from that time. It shows how Filipinos fought for their rights in their own ways during the 17th century. The novel was written by José Rizal.
