José de Sousa Saramago was a Portuguese novelist who lived from 16 November 1922, to 18 June 2010. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature for his "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony," which allowed readers to re-encounter an elusive reality. His literary works often took the form of allegories and presented unconventional viewpoints on historical events, focusing on the human element within religious and philosophical contexts.
