About “The stone raft”
Joana Carda scratches the ground with an elm branch, causing the mute dogs of Cerbere to bark, and the earth cracks open. The Iberian Peninsula separates from Europe and floats into the Atlantic. People flee coastal areas, wandering the interior of the floating island. Among them are Joaquim Sassa, Joana Carda, Jose Anaico, Pedro Orce, and a nameless dog. They end up in the home of Maria Guavaira. The Stone Raft is a 1986 novel by José Saramago that blends epic adventure with a political fable about the European Community.
